HC Deb 26 July 1976 vol 916 cc58-9W
Mr. George Rodgers

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what special assistance is available to local authorities for the preservation of graded buildings of historical value.

Mr. Shore

Local authorities, like other owners, can obtain grants towards the cost of repairing their buildings of outstanding architectural or historic interest under the provisions of the Historic Buildings and Ancient Monuments Act, and also towards the cost of expenditure on the promotion, preservation or enhancement of the character of conservation areas of outstanding architectural or historic interest under the Town and Country Planning (Amendment) Act 1972.

Mr. Luce

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether the research initiated in June 1975 to study the effect of traffic and other vibrations on a number of historic buildings has been completed; and, if so, what the findings are.

Mr. Shore

The study of traffic and other vibrations on historic buildings began in 1975 and will take four years to complete. It is hoped that an interim report will be available in about a year.
