HC Deb 14 July 1976 vol 915 cc199-200W
52. Mr. Cronin

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on his present plans for the M42 motorway.

Mr. Marks

The present intention is to build the M42 Motorway between the M5 —near Bromsgrove—and the M1—near Kegworth—as quickly as the resources allocated to the road programme permit. The route is being prepared in four sections and the current position on each is as follows:

  1. a. Bromsgrove Section: A decision on the proposals considered at the public inquiries held in 1973–74 is expected to be announced later this summer.
  2. b. Solihull Section: Is under construction and should be open to traffic by the end of this year.
  3. c. Tamworth Section:
    1. 1. Water Orton part—public inquiries into draft compulsory purchase orders opened on 29th June.
    2. 2. Kingsbury part—draft compulsory purchase orders are expected to be published early next year.
    3. 3. Polesworth part—draft compulsory purchase orders are expected to be published this autumn.
  4. d. Castle Donington Section: Following the withdrawal of the earlier published proposals, consultation with the public on alternative proposals for a route leading to the MI at Keg- 200 worth is expected to commence before the end of the year.
