HC Deb 12 July 1976 vol 915 cc46-7W
Rev. Ian Paisley

asked the Prime Minister if he will make a statement on his visit to Northern Ireland.

Rev. Ian Paisley

asked the Prime Minister if he will list the elected representatives he met on his visit to Northern Ireland.

The Prime Minister

The purpose of my visit to Northern Ireland on Monday, 5th July was to meet members of the security forces and essential services, to obtain a firsthand view of the general situation, and to meet members of the general public. I was also able to meet some members of the business and industrial community. Unfortunately, the trade union representatives were away, but I hope to be able to meet them at a later date.

During my visit I reaffirmed the Government's acceptance of their responsibility to Northern Ireland, and our determination to work with the people of Northern Ireland to restore peace and prosperity in the Province.

It was not the purpose of my visit, nor was there an opportunity in the time available, to meet elected representatives. I have opportunities at other times of meeting Northern Ireland elected representatives at Westminster.
