HC Deb 12 July 1976 vol 915 cc93-4W
Mr. Donald Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list the newspapers published in the United Kingdom to which British Council offices abroad subscribe.

Mr. Luard

United Kingdom newspapers are supplied to reading rooms at British Council posts overseas through the British Information Services. As my right hon. Friend explained in his reply of 7th May 1975 to the hon. Member for Aberdeenshire, East (Mr. Henderson), newspapers supplied to diplomatic posts through the British Information Services include the following: Birmingham Post, Daily Express, Daily Mail, Daily Mirror, Daily Telegraph, Financial Times, The Guardian, the Observer, the Scotsman, the Sun, Sunday Express, Sunday People, Sunday Telegraph, Sunday Times, The Times, Western Mail, Yorkshire Post.

Because of financial restrictions there are limitations on the number of newspapers supplied to overseas posts. Within these limits, the post is free to choose from among the British Press those newspapers best fitted to the local information objectives and to the interests of the majority of visitors to the reading room.
