asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his estimate of the total sum due as tax relief for mortgage interest in the present financial year.

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 30th June 1976; Vol. 914, c. 206], gave the following information:

The present forecast for the cost of tax relief on mortgage interest payments in 1976–77 is £1,020 million.
