asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is satisfied with the income tax system as it affects widows.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

I do not think it would be right to treat widows differently from single people for income tax purposes. The better way of helping them is by regular improvements in the level of widows' pensions, which we have increased by more than 70 per cent. since February 1974.
