Mr. Spence

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if, pending publication of the relevant "Guide to Unfair Dismissal Procedures", he will summarise in the Official Report the factors to be taken into account by tribunals in arriving at a compensation amount for wrongful dismissal and the maximum sums tribunals can award for wrongful dismissal; and if he will make a statement.

The general principles governing the assessment of compensation in cases of unfair dismissal are set out in paragraph 19 of Schedule 1 to the Trade Union and Labour Relations Act 1974 and are summarised in my Department's current guide on unfair dismissal. These principles will not be changed as a result of the Employment Protection Act 1975 and will continue to apply to the compensatory award. But the Act will introduce a basic award, in addition to the compensatory award, in relation to unfair dismissals occurring on or after 1st June 1976; and the amount of the
