§ Mr. Hayhoeasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate the approximate average weekly cost to public funds and loss to public revenue, by direct taxation and national insurance, per 1,000 increase in the unemployed, excluding students and school leavers.
§ Mr. Joel Barnett:Such estimates would depend on a number of assumptions, e.g. about what the unemployed would have earned. It is not possible to provide a general answer.
