§ Mr. Hayhoeasked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will estimate the net and gross costs of the job protection and job creation schemes introduced during the last year; and if he will give the numbers of jobs concerned.
§ Mr. John FraserHaving regard to experience to date, the estimated gross costs of the job protection and job creation schemes introduced in the past year, and the numbers of jobs concerned are:
350W
£M No. of jobs Job Creation Programme 40 33,000 Temporary Employment Subsidy 13 50,000 53 83,000 There will be savings in national insurance benefit and supplementary allowances which would otherwise be payable to the workers concerned. A calculation based on current average payments of unemployment benefit and supplementary allowances suggests that a saving of the order of £30 million might be expected. In addition, the Consolidated Fund benefits from income tax and national insurance contributions paid by these workers while in employment but sufficient information is not available to enable this offset to be calculated.
