HC Deb 29 January 1976 vol 904 c273W
Mr. Joseph Dean

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many of the 101,243 persons convicted of drunkenness offences in England and Wales in 1974 were held overnight in police custody before their appearance before courts.

Dr. Summerskill

97,857 persons were convicted of drunkenness in England and Wales in 1974. The information about how many were held overnight in police custody could only be obtained at disproportionate cost, as it would mean checking records at all individual police stations.

Mr. Joseph Dean

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what he estimates to be the expenditure incurred in police and magistrates' courts time in processing through from arrest to conviction of each drunkenness offender in England and Wales.

Dr. Summerskill

I regret that this information is not available.
