HC Deb 28 January 1976 vol 904 cc232-3W
33. Sir Anthony Royle

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what were the monthly figures for illegal immigrants who arrived in Hong Kong from China during the years 1974 and 1975, inclusive; if he will detail the methods used to reach the Colony; how many of these immigrants have returned to China against their wishes; and if he will make a statement about the case of Miss Tang San Chun who was found in Hong Kong on 14th December 1975.

Mr. Ennals

The number of illegal immigrants entering Hong Kong cannot be accurately stated since some remain undetected. They seek to enter on foot across the land frontier or by swimming or by junk across Mirs Bay or Deep Bay. Following the reintroduction of the repatriation policy in November 1974, 218 illegal immigrants were apprehended and returned to China in December 1974; 1,133 were returned in 1975.

Miss Tang Sau-chun entered Hong Kong illegally. She was in an exhausted state and was given appropriate medical treatment before being repatriated. After careful examination of her case no reasons were found why she should be allowed to remain in Hong Kong.
