HC Deb 26 January 1976 vol 904 cc1-2W
Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why the number of places for newly promoted police inspectors at Bramshill Police College was cut from 140 to 105 in the first course for 1976; why notice of this 25 per cent. reduction was not sent out to police forces until well after they had made arrangements to send their agreed quota of inspectors to attend; and if, bearing in mind the need to keep police training at the highest levels of efficiency; he will take steps to avoid any future sudden cutbacks of this kind.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

It finally became clear only in November that the staffing constraints within which the Home Office is currently having to operate would prevent the recruitment of additional academic staff needed for the newly revised inspectors' course at the Police College. Forces were then immediately informed of their revised allocations of places. I regret the inconvenience and disappointment caused to those who had been offered places, but could not, in the event, attend the course, and I shall do my best to avoid similar inconvenience in future.
