HC Deb 26 January 1976 vol 904 cc31-2W
Sir J. Eden

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what reply he has sent to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds concerning the importation of groups of birds which suffer high mortality or which otherwise travel badly which was referred to in the Society's letters dated 8th January 1976 and 21st November, 6th August and 9th July 1975.

Mr. Strang

Following a wide range of consultations with interested bodies several modifications were made to the original proposals for the import control of captive birds. On 12th November 1975 a memorandum setting out the revised proposals was sent to all interested parties, including the Royal Society for the Protection of birds. The detailed procedures for operating the controls are still being worked out in conjunction with the other Departments concerned. When the final procedures have been drawn up a detailed reply dealing with all the points raised by the Society will be sent, including that relating to the importation of birds which travel badly.
