In the 1971 Census of Population stockbrokers were included with insurance, shipping and air transport brokers, underwriters, stock jobbers and financial 598W agents in the category "finance and insurance brokers, and financial agents". According to a 10 per cent. sample of census returns the number of economically active persons in this category who were usually resident in the South-East region was 20,140, which represented 0.24 per cent. of all economically active persons usually resident in the South-East.
