HC Deb 22 January 1976 vol 903 cc562-3W
16. Dr. Hampson

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he will make a statement on the effect in Northern Ireland of the Government's plans for the reduction of teacher training in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Moyle

After consultations with representatives of educational bodies and other interested parties it has been decided that in Northern Ireland the number of students who will be admitted to teacher training in 1976 will be 1,350. This compares with an intake of 1,800 in 1975. The reduction is considered necessary in order to ensure an eventual teaching force commensurate with the forecast of school population in five years' time. An advisory committee is being set up which will advise on the supply and training of teachers in future years.
