HC Deb 22 January 1976 vol 903 cc539-40W
Mr. Michael Marshall

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether it is Government policy to subsidise rail commuter lines outside cities.

Dr. Gilbert

The net losses of these services are being met by the Government grant paid under Section 3 of the Railways Act 1974.

Mr. Michael Marshall

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether the Government are considering the withdrawal of subsidies which are likely to result in increases of between 15 per cent. and 50 per cent. in commuter rail fares.

Dr. Gilbert

Rail fares are among the matters being studied in the Transport Policy Review. No conclusions have been reached at this stage.
