HC Deb 22 January 1976 vol 903 cc548-9W
Mr. Baker

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he has received any proposals to reduce the number of primary schools in the ILEA area over the next five years.

Miss Joan Lestor

A formal proposal from the ILEA to cease to maintain Compton Primary School in Islington was submitted to my right hon. Friend in March 1975 and a decision will soon be announced. It is the responsibility of the ILEA to decide if further proposals to cease to maintain primary schools in their area should be made.

Mr. Baker

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he has received any proposals from the ILEA concerning its expenses in the light of the declining school population.

Miss Joan Lestor

It is the responsibility of the ILEA to determine future plans for schools in its area and these would only be referred to my right hon. Friend where formal proposals under Section 13 of the Education Act 1944, as amended, were required.
