HC Deb 22 January 1976 vol 903 c569W
Mr. Fairbairn

asked the Secretary of State for Industry how many forms for completion requiring or requesting information have been sent to each section of industry by each Department of State in the year June 1974 to June 1975.

Mr. Carmichael

In this 12-month period, 520,000 statistical forms were sent by the Department to firms in the manufacturing, construction and mining and quarrying industries; and some 260,000 to firms in the distributive and service trades.

The Survey Control Unit of the Central Statistical Office estimates that the number of statistical forms sent to businesses by other Government Departments was of the order of 2½ million. This included 500,000 forms sent out in the annual Census of Employment, 200,000 in monthly or quarterly employment inquiries, and 300,000 in the New Earnings Survey or other, shorter period, earnings inquiries—all by the Department of Employment. The figure also included 600,000 forms sent to farmers by the Agricultural Departments.
