UNITED KINGDOM
(thousands)
1959 1965 1974
Total employed labour force 23,756 25,205 25,112
Employment in the public sector (including HM Forces) 5,920 5,969 6,866
Notes.
(1) Comparable estimates are not available for years prior to 1959; also, the estimates for 1975 are not available yet.
(2) The figures for the three years shown are not strictly comparable for a number of reasons, the most important being the creation of the British Steel Corporation in 1967. In 1968, BSC had some 250,000 employees. Estimates of employment in the public sector in 1974 exclude some state employees in individual firms, e.g. Rolls-Royce Ltd.
