asked the Minister for the Civil Service what was the total number of non-industrial civil servants employed by central government, local government and statutory bodies at the end of 1975; and what were the comparable figures in 1955 and 1965.

At 1st October 1975 there were 540,172 non-industrial civil servants in post. The numbers—excluding Post Office employees—at the same date in 1955 and 1965 were 385,258 and 423,347, respectively. The employees of local government and statutory bodies are not civil servants.
