§ Mr. Michael McGuireasked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will make a statement on the reasons which caused him to reject the evidence presented to him by the British television tube manufacturers about the need to stop importing into the United Kingdom certain sizes and types of television tubes.
§ Mr. DeakinsOnly a limited range of television tubes is currently manufactured in this country, and wider controls would have caused serious harm to the British television set industry. Imports of colour television tubes fell substantially in 1975, and any practicable scheme to restrict imports of those types of tubes made in the United Kingdom would not have resolved in any significant degree the basic excess capacity problem of the British industry.
§ Mr. Michael McGuireasked the Secretary of State for Trade what consultation or exchange of information takes place with other EEC Governments regarding controlling the importation of television tubes into the EEC.
§ Mr. DeakinsOther EEC Governments have been informed of the outcome of my Department's recent investigation into allegations of dumping of Japanese colour television tubes and of my right hon. Friend's decision to introduce a system of surveillance licensing on imports.
