HC Deb 12 January 1976 vol 903 cc89-90W
Mr. Wm. Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many persons from Londonderry City and Londonderry County have been either interned or detained during the current troubles; what payments will be or have been made to these persons for their period of detention; whether any of these persons have made any claims for compensation; if so, on what grounds; and have any compensation payments been made to them.

Mr. Merlyn Rees,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 15th December 1975; Vol. 902, c. 510], gave the following information:

110 persons from Londonderry City and 77 from Londonderry County were interned or detained between 9th August 1971 and 5th December 1975.

No compensation has been paid to any person in respect of his lawful internment or detention, although some claims have been made. Up to 30th November, 1975 some £575,000 had been paid in cases of civil court claims by former internees and detainees seeking redress for wrongful arrest, wrongful imprisonment and assault and battery. Information about the amounts paid to such persons from Londonderry City and County is not readily available.
