Mr. George Rodgers

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the total amount paid out in unemployment benefits in each of the last five complete years and the number of recipients of benefit in each of those years.

The numbers of unemployed persons in receipt of unemployment or supplementary benefit at May of each year was as follows:

account unemployment benefit, redundancy payments and supplementary benefits.

It is estimated that the average weekly payment of unemployment benefit and supplementary benefit being made to an unemployed person who is registering for work is about £17.30.

The average payment received by employees in respect of whom payments were made from the Redundancy Fund during 1975 was £524. No information is available as to the average amount of other forms of redundancy payments.
