HC Deb 19 February 1976 vol 905 c798W
18. Mr. Flannery

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many local councils in Northern Ireland have held municipal elections during the past two years; and if he will make a statement on the accepted workings of the electoral democratic process in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Orme

Seven by-elections have been held to fill vacancies in district councils in Northern Ireland during the last two years. The 14 remaining vacancies were filled by six candidates who were returned unopposed, and by the co-option of eight members.

I am satisfied that the present electoral democratic process is working satisfactorily.
