asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the official establishment figure for all the police forces in England and Wales and their actual police strength at the last known date and the numbers recruited and resigned in 1975.

Dr. Summerskill

On 31st December 1975 the total establishment of all police forces in England and Wales was 116,007 and the actual strength was 105,743. In addition, 1,395 officers were on secondment to central services, regional crime squads and other special units. 10,398 police officers, including 54 who transferred from the British Airports' Authority Constabulary, were recruited during the year, and 5,314 officers left the service.
