HC Deb 18 February 1976 vol 905 cc736-7W
Mr. Spearing

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what was the cost of Her Majesty's Embassy in Madagascar for the last full year of operations, together with a breakdown of the principal categories of expenditure; what savings he expects from its closure; and on what basis he makes such a calculation.

Mr. Ennals

The full costs in the last full year of operations, including those borne on the vote of the Department of the Environment—Property Services Agency—were approximately £80,000, in the following categories:

£'000
Salaries, allowances etc., of United Kingdom-based staff 34
Salaries, allowances etc., of locally engaged staff 16
Accommodation, office and residential 6
Travel 8
Communications (Queen's Messengers' journeys, post, telegrams, telephones) 12
Transport 2
Miscellaneous 2
80

The arrangements made for an alternative form of representation are expected to cost about £5,000 a year. The savings from closure of the Embassy are, therefore, expected to be about £75,000.
