HC Deb 11 February 1976 vol 905 c257W
Mr. Pym

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what representations his Department has received since 1971 favouring the introduction of EEC Directive 118/71.

Mr. Strang

None specifically in favour of the directive as a whole; it is unusual to receive representation in favour of complex provisions of this nature. But the purposes of the directive, as subsequently amended by directive EEC 75/431, do, I believe, command a wide measure of support among those concerned with public health in the United Kingdom. Moreover, I note that after taking evidence from consumer, producer, trade and professional interests, the Committee of the House of Lords on the European Communities in their Fifth Report substantially endorsed the purposes of the directives.
