HL Deb 10 February 1976 vol 368 cc75-6WA
Lord CHELWOOD

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will seek ways, through diplomatic or other channels, to urge the Rhodesian authorities to release Mr. Garfield Todd from house arrest, particularly since the talks between black and white which he advocated but which were unacceptable to those who ordered his detention in 1972 are now taking place at official level and with official approval.

Lord GORONWY-ROBERTS

As the noble Lord may be aware, it has been announced that Mr. Todd is to be released from restriction for one month to allow him to visit the United Kingdom. The Government welcome this slight relaxation of the restriction in Mr. Todd's case but will continue to press the illegal regime in Rhodesia to release unconditionally or bring to trial all persons detained or restricted without trial in Rhodesia.
