HC Deb 09 February 1976 vol 905 cc37-8W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what further steps he proposes to take to protect the textile industry from imports deriving from low-cost developing countries; and if, in that connection, he will make a statement on recent and anticipated movements of Great Britain's share of the world market in textiles.

Mr. Shore

Restrictions have already been introduced on potentially disruptive imports from a number of significant low-cost developing countries, including Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan. Additional restrictions will be introduced as further voluntary restraint agreements are negotiated under the GATT Multi-Fibre Arrangement. If necessary, we shall also seek emergency restrictions where they can be justified. I regret that the information requested in the second part of the Question is not available, although I can confirm that the recent trend in our textile exports is upwards.
