asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will estimate the total accumulated time spent by long-stay patients in mental hospitals in Scotland.

At 31st December 1974, the latest date for which information is available, the total number of patients who had been resident in mental hospitals in Scotland for more than two years was as follows:

2–5 years 2,639
5–10 years 2,032
10–15 years 1,320
15–20 years 1,030
Over 20 years 4,282

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many children are currently patients in mental handicap hospitals in Scotland.

On 31st December 1974, the latest date for which information is available, 1,003 children, up to and including 14 years of age, were resident in mental deficiency hospitals in Scotland.
