Mr. Lawrence

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons pleaded not guilty before a jury and were acquitted in England and Wales in each 12-month period since 1973.

Of the 18,223 persons who pleaded not guilty at the Crown Court in 1973, 51 per cent. were acquitted. In 1974, 17,608 persons pleaded not guilty and 52 per cent. were acquitted. Figures for 1975 are not yet available.
