asked the Secretary of State for Employment what functions, regulated by his Department, are carried out by United Kingdom local authorities; and if he will list the Acts under which these functions are performed.

The functions and the relevant Acts are listed belowFunction: The Careers Service in England, Scotland and Wales. (There are separate arrangements in Northern Ireland). Act: Employment and Training Act, 1973. Function: Provision of sheltered employment for blind or sighted severely disabled persons. Act: Disabled Persons (Employment) Acts, 1944 and 1958. Function: Some enforcement responsibilities are carried out by local authorities under some of the Acts whch are, either wholly or in part, relevant statutory provisions for the purpose of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 as listed in Schedule 1 to the Act.
