HC Deb 04 February 1976 vol 904 cc671-2W
Mr. Ronald Atkins

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what residential hostels, day centres and sheltered workshops for the mentally ill, and of what capacity, exist in the local authority areas of Greater Manchester and Lancashire, respectively.

Dr. Owen

In Greater Manchester, 25 hostels, four day centres and one sheltered workshop, providing respectively 265, 142 and 54 places; and in Lancashire seven hostels providing 91 places. In addition and Thanet Health District in 1974–75

there are, in some hospitals, industrial centres which provide occupation for mentally ill patients.

Mr. Ronald Atkins

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many residential hostels, day centres and sheltered workshops, and with what capacities, have been established in Preston since 1959 for the mentally ill.

Dr. Owen

None has been established exclusively for the mentally ill, but four such hostels for the mentally handicapped admit some mentally ill people.
