HC Deb 04 February 1976 vol 904 c589W
Mr. Hal Miller

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs which countries have already extended, which are currently taking action to extend and which intend to extend their fishing limits to 200 miles should the Law of the Sea Conference so decide.

Mr. Ennals

The countries already claiming a 200-mile fisheries limit were listed in my Written reply to a Question by the hon. Member for Caernarvon (Mr. Wigley) on 12th January. From public statements made at the Conference it appears that the concept of a 200-mile economic zone, within which the coastal State would have jurisdiction over, inter alia, fisheries, is supported by the majority of States at the United Nations Law of the Sea Conference, including the United Kingdom as part of a generally acceptable convention.
