§ Mr. Cantasked the Minister for the Civil Service whether, as a contribution towards the achievement of his objective of cutting public expenditure, and as an example to local authorities, he will request the Civil Service Commission to stop advertising vacancies for economists with prospects leading to over £11,000 per annum.

MorrisNo. The Civil Service Commission is required to fill vacancies for cadet economists and economic assistants in a wide range of Government Departments, and must, therefore, advertise in a way which makes use of the most attractive aspects of the job. A candidate entering Government service in one of these grades has prospects of eventual promotion to senior economic adviser, whose salary in Inner London ranges from £9,115 to £11,465. Salaries in the economist grades, like other Civil Service salaries, are fixed by reference to salaries for broadly comparable work in other parts of the public sector and in the private sector.
