HC Deb 03 February 1976 vol 904 c578W
Mr. Jessel

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what subsidies are now paid to orchestras.

Mr. Hugh Jenkins

Government subsidy to orchestras, as for other artistic activities, is provided through the Arts Council of Great Britain. I understand that in 1974–75 the total of such grants to orchestras other than those attached to subsidised opera and ballet companies amounted to about £1.75 million. This figure excludes expenditure by local authorities, BBC orchestras, regional arts associations and commercial support and sponsorship.
