HC Deb 02 February 1976 vol 904 cc495-6W
Mr. Tim Renton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the total number of students who applied in 1974 and 1975 for unemployment benefit; to how many students unemployment benefit was paid; and what was the total cost to public funds.

Mr. Harold Walker

Our records of claims and payments of unemployment benefit do not distinguish between claims made by students and those made by other unemployed persons. The number of unemployed students registered for employment was 91,530 at 14th April 1975; 93,464 at 11th August 1975; and in the Official Report the number of projects that have been submitted by each local authority in the North-West Region of England; how many have been accepted and how many have been rejected; and how many jobs have been created.

Mr. Harold Walker

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that information requested is as follows:

10,511 at 11th December 1975. The comparable figures for April and August 1974 were 66,857 and 27,634 respectively. A comparable figure for December 1974 is not available.
