Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the total cost of national insurance contributions by employers in each of the public sector and the private sector in the latest year for which the figures are available; and what is the estimated cost for 1975.

Mr. O'Malley

It is estimated that in 1974–75 employers' contributions were about £850 million in the public sector and about £2,150 million in the private sector. It is estimated that in respect of 1975–76 the contributions expected from employers will total about £1,200 million in the public sector and about £3,000 million in the private sector.
