HC Deb 21 December 1976 vol 923 cc124-5W
Mr. Dempsey

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what plans he has for supporting United Kingdom participation in the International Energy Agency's Solar Energy Programme.

Mr. Eadie

The University College, Cardiff has been designated by the Government to be a participant in an IEA collaborative programme to develop and test solar heating and cooling systems. The United Kingdom work will be undertaken by the Solar Energy Unit of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Energy Studies at the University College and it will develop standard test procedures to determine the performance of a broad class of collectors for use in solar heating and cooling systems. Other participants to the implementing agreement will be carrying out similar work in their own countries and the results will form a comprehensive body of data on solar collector test procedures and designs which will be available to all participants. The Department intends to provide financial support for this work at the University College as part of its programme in the field of solar energy. The funds to be made available total £37,800 over three years.

The United Kingdom hopes to participate in other aspects of this work in the near future.
