HC Deb 21 December 1976 vol 923 cc106-7W
Mr. Christopher Price

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if the results of the October census of schools milk are now available.

Mrs. Shirley Williams

In October 1,924,000 pupils in special schools in England and Wales and pupils in other maintained schools entitled to it on grounds of age were receiving free school milk. In addition 42,000 primary school children over the age of seven were receiving free school milk on health grounds. These figures represent 93.9 per cent. and 1.6 per cent. of the respective age-groups present on the day of the census. On that day 38 local education authorities were selling milk to pupils in 1,165 primary and 27 secondary schools.

This statement, with the agreement of my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Wales, includes returns from Welsh authorities.
