asked the Secretary of State for Transport what standards are laid down by him for providing resurfacing of A and B class roads in England and Wales.

Class A roads which are not trunk roads, and Class B roads, are the responsibility of local highway authorities. No standards are laid down, but recommendations are contained in Road Note 29 and resurfacing materials should conform with the Department's Specification for Road and Bridgeworks as amended from time to time. I am sending copies of these two documents to my hon. Friend.
