HC Deb 21 December 1976 vol 923 c138W
Mrs. Wise

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what are the future prospects for obtaining new law courts and ancillary accommodation in Coventry, in the light of the inadequacy of the present accommodation and the ready availability of suitable skilled labour.

Mr. John

As was stated in the White Paper on Public Expenditure to 1979–80 Cmnd. 6393, published in February this year, the reduced allocation of capital for magistrates' courts will not permit any new work in the later years of the period. It has not proved possible, therefore, to proceed with the combined higher court/magistrates' court complex in Coventry which was due to start in 1977–78. It is likely that separate arrangements will now be made for the provision of magistrates' courts and for the higher courts which are the responsibility of the Lord Chancellor, but it is not possible to say when money will be available for these projects.
