HC Deb 21 December 1976 vol 923 cc146-7W
Mr. Park

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what steps he is taking to impose a definite quota on imports of cars from Japan.

Mr. Meacher

Following exchanges earlier this year with the British car industry, the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers' Association forecast that there would be no conspicuous change in the Japanese share of the British car market. In 1975 Japanese cars accounted for 9.04 per cent. of British registrations, and in the first eleven months of this year for 9.53 per cent. I understand that further discussions between the British and Japanese industries are likely to take place early next year, and I look forward to continuing and effective restraint on imports into Britain from this source.
