asked the Secretary of State for Wales what representations he has received regarding the proposed system of voting for the Welsh Assembly.

Mr. John Morris

Of the 147 bodies that have made representations to me following the publication of the White Paper "Our Changing Democracy" (Cmnd. 6348), 16 commented specifically on the proposed system of voting. The following were in favour of the Government's proposed system: Council for the Principality, South Glamorgan County Council, Wales TUC, Welsh Council.

The following favoured some form of proportional representation:

  • Arfon Borough Council,
  • British Medical Association, Welsh Committee,
  • Caerphilly Divisional Liberal Association,
  • Ceredigion Association of Local Councils,
  • Ceredigion District Council,
  • Country Landowners Association,
  • Clwyd Local Medical Committee,
  • Communist Party, Welsh Committee,
  • Electoral Reform Society of Great Britain and Ireland,
  • Electoral Reform Society in Scotland,
  • Plaid Cymru,
  • Montgomery District Council.
A small number of individuals who made representations also favoured proportional representation.
