§ Mr. Roy Hughesasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many young calves were exported from the United Kingdom in the period from January to September 1976; and what effect he estimates this will have on the availability and price of beef in the future.
§ Mr. Strang154,129 calves were exported from the United Kingdom between January and September 1976. The Government are concerned that such exports should not endanger our own beef production objectives as set out in the White Paper "Food from Our Own Resources". However, the total exports so far this year have been more than balanced by a reduction in calf slaughterings compared with the same period in 1975. This means that more calves have been retained for future beef production
