asked the Secretary of State for Transport (1) how many additional bus and coach drivers will be required in the United Kingdom if the EEC Regulation 543/69 comes into force on 1st March 1977;

(2) how many additional bus and coach drivers will be required in each metropolitan county area if EEC Regulation 543/69 comes into force on 1st March 1977;

(3) how many additional bus and coach drivers will be required in each non-metropolitan county council area if EEC Regulation 543/69 comes into force on 1st March 1977;

(4) how many additional HGV licensed drivers will be required in the United Kingdom if EEC Regulation 543/69 comes into force on 1st March 1977;

(5) how many additional bus and coach drivers will be required in Scotland if EEC Regulation 543/69 comes into force on 1st March 1977;

(6) what is the estimated cost to the United Kingdom economy of implementing from 1st March 1977 EEC Regulation 543/69 on Road Transport;

(7) how many additional bus and coach drivers will be required in the Greater London Council area if EEC Regulation 543/69 comes into force on 1st March 1977.

No accurate estimates have been made. Moreover, I intend to apply to the Commission shortly for a further deferment, beyond 28th February 1977, of the application of the Regulation, except Article 5, to internal United Kingdom transport.

(2) what is the estimated cost to the United Kingdom of implementing from 1st March 1977 EEC Regulation 17/76 on road transport;

(3) how many additional HGV licensed drivers will be required in the United Kingdom if EEC Regulation 17/76 comes into force on 1st March 1977;

(4) how many additional bus and coach drivers will be required in Scotland if EEC Regulation 17/76 comes into force on 1st March 1977;

(5) how many additional bus and coach drivers will be required in each non-metropolitan county council area in England and Wales if EEC Regulation 17/76 comes into force on 1st March 1977;

(6) how many additional bus and coach drivers will be required in each metropolitan county council area if EEC Regulation 17/76 comes into force on 1st March 1977;

(7) how many additional bus and coach drivers will be required in the United Kingdom if EEC Regulation 17/76 comes into force on 1st March 1977.

The Commission's proposals for amendment to Regulation 543/69 are likely to be substantially modified before their adoption by the Council of Ministers. Furthermore. I am seeking a long transitional period before they have to be applied in full to internal United Kingdom transport. In these circumstances it is not possible to make realistic estimates.
