§ Mr. Hefferasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what recent discussions he has had about conditions in Walton Prison, Liverpool; if he is satisfied with these conditions, both for prisoners and prison staff; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. JohnWe understand that discussions between the Governor and staff about the régime at Liverpool Prison have been continuing, and as a result it has been possible to introduce improved facilities, with particular reference to education classes, physical education and longer workshop hours. The scope for further improvements at this, as at other establishments, will be affected by current overcrowding and the need for economic restraint.
