HC Deb 09 December 1976 vol 922 cc333-4W
Mr. Lomas

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food who is responsible for the checking of the small importer of animals to see that quarantine regulations are not broken.

Mr. Strang

Responsibility for the quarantine regulations imposed under the Rabies (Importation of Dogs, Cats and other Mammals) Order 1974 lies with the Agriculture Departments in Great Britain. Enforcement at the port of entry is carried out by local authorities through their Diseases of Animals Inspectors, the police and Her Majesty's Customs. Each authorised quarantine station is under the daily supervision of a veterinary or medical practitioner appointed by the appropriate Agriculture Department, and is inspected regularly by the State Veterinary Service.
