Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Trade how many hotels have gone bankrupt in the past 12 months; how many of these were in the London area; and, of the latter, how many were in the four-star or five-star category.

Provisional figures, which relate to individuals and companies owning hotels in the United Kingdom are given below for the 12 months ending 30th September 1976. Separate figures for the London area are not available.

Company liquidations (2) 80

(1) Relates to both self-employed persons and partnerships. The total of receiving orders and administration orders in England and Wales, sequestration orders in Scotland, and adjudication orders, protection orders and administration orders in Northern Ireland, made in the period. These three sets of figures are broadly comparable. Excludes summary sequestration orders, for which no information about the debtor's occupation is available.

(2) The total of compulsory liquidations and creditors' voluntary liquidations begun in the period.
