HC Deb 02 December 1976 vol 921 cc263-4W
Mr. Geraint Howells

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how much lamb and sheep meat is consumed per head of population in the United Kingdom at the present time; what were the corresponding figures for the last 10 years; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Bishop

My Department does not have figures of actual consumption. Estimates of total supplies of mutton and lamb available for consumption per head of population in the United Kingdom in the second quarter of 1976, the latest period for which figures are available, compared with the same period in the ten preceding years are as follows:

April-June Kg. per head
1966 2.7
1967 2.7
1968 2.6
1969 2.1
1970 2.3
1971 2.5
1972 2.2
1973 2.0
1974 1.6
1975 2.1
1976 1.9

Consumption of the various meats reflects available supply, the availability and price of competing meats and other proteins as well as consumer preferences.
